On Thursday afternoon one the terrific attack ever to occur in a military base in US was launched by an army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. The attack happened at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Texas, the largest military base in the world. Major Nidal Malik Hasan armed with a FN 5.7 millimeter pistol and a .357 Magnum intentionally opened fire on more than 40 people leaving 13 dead and 38, including himself wounded.
Everybody is asking why, how such cruelty. The gunman Major Nidal Malik Hasan is 39 year-old psychiatrist. He joined the army after high school graduation. In May he was promoted major but expressed his displeasure about being deployed in Afghanistan.
Since the Iraq war started, suicide among US army division has dramatically increased. Many soldiers coming back from war manifested variety of emotional illness as well as physical. According to the Washington Post 117 suicide s among active-duty army soldier have occurred this year and 300,000 of Ira and Afghanistan veteran confirmed having symptoms of post traumatic stress or depression.
On Friday Pres. Obama delayed his trip to Capitol Hill to visit the Walter Reed Medical Center. “It’s difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battle overseas. It's horrifying that they should come under fire in an army base on US soil." he quoted.
The alleged gunman, Major Nidal Malik Hasan was shot 4 times but survived his wounds and remains in intensive care. The FBI and law enforcement are still working on the scene to figure out the motive behind this deadliest rampage.
